Continuing Our Mission Through the Gloucester Housing Partnership

Gloucester Housing PartnershipThe Samaritan Group, Inc. founded the Gloucester Housing Partnership in 1991 for the purpose of housing repair. Funds from SGI are used to help defray material costs for low-income families in Gloucester County in need of home repair. The Partnership is continuing to assist the citizens of Gloucester County with basic home repairs that afford the homeowner a warm, safe, dry and accessible home. The Gloucester Housing Partnership, Inc., (GHPI) was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1992 as a 501© 3 non-profit organization. In 2014 they were able to complete 22 projects at an average cost of $3,794.19. Projects ranged from the placement of a window air-conditioner to a handicapped accessible bathroom. Since 1992, GHP has completed projects at a total cost of $1,742,470.00. All work is completed at no cost to the home-owner. Applications for assistance are available from the Department of Social Services or by contacting the office at 804-792-5079 or email at coordinator@ghp4u.com

Gloucester Housing Partnership home repairsIn 2014, the Gloucester Housing Partnership used the funds they received from a donation by the Daily Press-Ferguson Holiday Fund to renovate the bathroom of Raegan Stokes, a 12-year old girl with cerebral palsy. Foreman Danny Joyce lead a group of local volunteers and reworked the walls of the space, enlarged the doors and installed a roll-in shower.

In 1990 the Gloucester Resource Council became concerned about people with financial needs that could not be met by existing government and private agencies/programs. The area of concern focused on the needs of families who "fall through the cracks", resulting in the formation of the Samaritan Group and later in 1992 the Gloucester Housing Partnership, Inc.

In 1992 one project was completed at a cost of $250, and in 2011 15 projects were completed with a total cost of $94,515.30. Since the founding in 1992, the Gloucester Housing Partnership has completed over 430 projects at a total cost of more than $1,500,000.00. All the work is completed at no cost to the home-owner.

Gloucester Housing Partnership is supported by local groups and organizations including The Gloucester Community Foundation, Bernardine Franciscan Sisters Foundation and the United Way.
